How To Save Money On Your Next Bedroom Interior Design

January 30, 2008 · Leave a Comment

You want your bedroom to look fantastic but don’t rush into hiring a designer without checking out the total cost of a designer package. It doesn’t take a lot of money to achieve a great bedroom interior design if you are prepared to apply some effort and creativity.

Until you choose your bedding hold off on further decorating. The biggest element in your room most likely will be the bedding, so that’s where you want to start when planning your overall design. Choose the bedding to form your desired room, matching the colors or theme that you want.

A great way to decorate your bed is to look through the discount section or closeout bins, instead of paying high prices for matching sets. Grab some color swatches and head out to some stores looking for a match for the bedding. Pile a bunch of pillows at the head of your bed that have your key colors, different shapes and patterns to give your bed a designer look. Purchase the pillows at a home goods or home decorating store.

Carefully shopping for furniture can also help reduce the cost of the bedroom interior design. Like-new pieces of furniture at garage sales and consignment stores is a great way to save money, especially when you look at the cost of a similar piece bought brand new. A new look can be achieved by repainting the old set and finding new knobs for it.

To make a huge difference, without costing an arm and a leg, those looking for a significant change in the bedroom, might try a fresh coat of paint. You can dare to use bold colors if they carry out the theme of your choice. Use one of the many different faux finishes or paint effects available from your local paint store for an exclusive look in your home.

Your bedroom will look great when you find those unique finishing pieces at tag sales, discount stores and antique markets and you will be saving money at the same time. However, not every article in good condition with a small price tag is a bargain – make sure you know exactly what you’re looking for and pass on items that don’t quite fit the bill. The size and the color of the room must be considered if you want to be sure to buy the perfect accessories. Then you’ll be sure not to go shopping and come back with extra stuff you didn’t intend to buy!

If you can picture the bedroom of your choice and know where to shop than bedroom interior design is not as hard and costly as you think. If you want to save money always look for sales. You might have to wait for exactly the right pieces, but in the end you’ll have a beautiful and unique bedroom.

Enjoy!

Give Your Home The Look Of Summer Decor

January 8, 2008 · Leave a Comment

In northern climates when the sun comes out (even if it’s only for a few months of the year) many decor-savvy individuals like to freshen the look of their rooms. Bring summer indoors in full force – without losing the comfortable and cozy furnishings you desire in the cooler months.

How can you transform your home into a summer retreat? It’s easy!

“Let the SUNSHINE In…”

Summertime is all about light. Put the heavy drapery away and make the widows a focal point. While the light is great during the day – especially if you don’t need to turn on interior lights – you may dislike the cavernous black holes that they become late at night. For privacy and appearance, keep up the retractable blinds during the day and put them down at night behind a sheer curtain.

Use mirrors to capture the sunlight and bounce it around. This doesn’t mean a major change in your decor but you may find moving a large mirror to a different wall will optimize the light reflection in the room. Try it across from a window or on a wall that corners against the window wall for the most light distribution.

Open Up the Room…

While some people change their furniture arrangement all the time, others rarely consider it. Moving the furniture into a ’summer arrangement’ can optimize your space and give it a more airy feel.

If you normally place the living room furniture to focus on the fireplace consider turning them to face away. This can open up the space and make it more inviting for summertime get togethers. If you barbecue you might even switch the dining and living room area around if it will give you a better flow for entertaining and enjoying the evening sun during meals.

Roll up the area rugs, leave the table bare and get rid of excess blankets, pillows and other ‘comfy’ materials that tend to warm up the space.

If you find that look is too plain, consider buying or making covers for the pillows that compliment your summer scheme. Celadon green, aqua blues, a hit of orange or even nautical navy and white stripes work great. You might also throw in a rattan or bamboo covered pillow (for looks – not comfort!).

If you have plenty of storage space (you’ve packed away all the winter clothes and drapery so you should be fine) you might like to use white cotton or canvas slipcovers on the furniture. Not only will it brighten the room, but they can come off easily to be cleaned so you needn’t worry about stains – which is never a good look!

Bring the Outdoors In…

A large tropical with palm leaves will give an instant injection of summer to your rooms. Adding some colorful cut flowers will add further summer appeal. However, too much of anything is not good. Don’t clutter your rooms with so many plants it feels like a conservatory.

Using one or two of these suggestions will be sure to help you take full advantage of summer – while its here!

Patio Style

You want to coordinate the style of your patio to that of your house.  Aim for your patio design to match the age and style of your house.  A Victorian style home might look best with an intricate patio complete with wrought iron furniture.  If you have a modern home, then reflect that modern sleek style in your patio design and accessories.  The patio is really an extension of your house so stick to the style that you have inside your home.

Plants

Adding great plants to your patio area will really make it pop.  Of course, you can plant flowers, grasses and trees right in the ground, but you should also have lush potted plants in containers that you can decorate your patio with.  For the best effect, set several containers of different heights together in a group.  A little tip when grouping containers – always use an odd number like 3 or 5 together.

Patio Surface

Of course, the most important aspect of your patio is the surface and this is something you should choose before anything else.  You could use brick for a formal patio.  A Mediterranean style home might look great with a concrete patio.  You can also use different style pavers, flagstone, sandstone or even marble.  In addition to matching your home style, you want to consider durability and ease of cleaning when you are shopping for patio materials.

Patio Accessories

Depending on what you want, you can have a small table and chairs or an outdoor grilling station and bar.  Which of these patio ideas is right for you?  Your only limited by space, imagination and budget.  Some items to consider including in your patio are seating, a hot tub, an outdoor bar, a cooking area, lighting and a water fountain.

Patio Furniture

Todays patio furniture is versatile – weatherproof plastic that looks like wicker, painted metal and woods like redwood or teak are popular.  Remember that you do get what you pay for and spending a little more on better quality furniture can pay off in the long run.  Keep in mind that the furniture will be outdoors so get stuff that is weatherproof.

Coming up with great patio ideas is as easy as going down to your local home improvement store and looking at the selection of patio blocks, pavers, furniture and accessories.  Then use what you find to design your own unique and useful patio.
